Can Pixel Buds Connect To Multiple Devices? (Alt.)

After a lukewarm response to their first generation of Pixel Buds, Google bounced back with the truly wireless Pixel Buds 2 in October 2019. They got rid of the hideous fabric string that connected the buds, keeping their attractive mentos-like design and adding other impressive features.

Besides adding concha fins that help stabilize these buds in your ear, they have also added hardware and software upgrades that offer an improved performance.

The oval charging case also takes a new turn from its predecessor, ditching the bulky original design that had to accommodate the cable as well. They also store more charge than they initially did.

This iteration is also touch-sensitive, automatically connects with Google Assistant, can take voice commands, and can also help you translate using Google Translate. Their clarity when taking voice calls is also unparalleled, making them ideal for hands-free call management.

While Google has a long way to go in terms of battery quality and noise-canceling, they are a decent competitor for other premium buds like Apple’s AirPods, AirPods Pro, and Jabra Elite 75t.

You’ll get similar sound quality on your Apple device as you would with AirPods.

With this short breakdown of Google’s Pixel Buds, let’s look at one feature that we all care about. Connectivity.

If you’re like me, you own several devices, and you’d prefer to own buds that can connect to two devices at once. You also want buds that can switch between devices as seamlessly as possible. So, let’s answer this question:

Can Pixel Buds 2 connect to multiple devices?

Short answer? No.

Pixel Buds 2 do not support multipoint connectivity. However, knowing Google, this might change soon either with a software update or hardware upgrade.

In fact, this is uncharted territory for most earbud brands available in the market. You won’t find many earbuds that can connect to multiple devices at once.

As a result, I did some research to find out if there were any notable contenders for multipoint Bluetooth connections. Let’s look at the results of what I found below. Jump ahead or read through.

We did a full review to compare between Google Pixel Buds and Raycon Earbuds.

Why connect your earbuds to multiple devices?

Are you always switching between devices at school or at work? Then using earbuds that have multipoint capabilities is one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. Connecting your earbuds to multiple devices allows you to perform several tasks at once.

It’s quite convenient and helps boost your productivity. Connecting your work phone, personal laptop, or iPad to a compatible pair of earbuds allows you to stay aware of everything that’s happening around you.

You can receive business calls without having to switch devices and get back to listening to your favorite podcast once the call ends.

Can earbuds be connected to two devices?

Yes. Provided your earbuds are compatible with multipoint connectivity, this shouldn’t be an issue. However, you may have to understand the limits and limitations your particular brand set on their earbuds. Some may only connect to devices of the same kind. Others may connect to over two devices.

The pros of connecting multiple devices to your earbuds

Here are several benefits of connecting multiple devices to your earbuds:

Convenience

Connecting two of your devices to your earbuds saves you the energy and time of disconnecting and reconnecting to another device. Multipoint Bluetooth connectivity allows for a seamless switch.

When a call comes through your primary device, your earbuds drop your secondary device until the call is complete, then reconnect.

Increased Productivity

With two devices connected to your earbuds, you can perform over two tasks at a time. You can now listen to audio as you work, knowing that you won’t miss any important client or business calls.

The Cons of connecting multiple devices to your earbuds

Unreliability

Multipoint Bluetooth technology is relatively new especially in earbuds. You may experience some failures and drop-offs in connection while using them.

Battery consumption

Connecting multiple devices to your earbuds might tax their battery, reducing their longevity. You might have to charge your earbuds more often than you would if you had just connected them to a single device only.

With charging cases, this may not be such an enormous concern.
