Webcams have become a must-have, especially during this period. More people are now working from home.

Companies and businesses have evolved to meet the needs of their workers and continue operations using virtual and remote working options.

Many meetings are conducted online, with participants making presentations, interacting and giving feedback via Zoom Meetings and similar software. For proper interaction over the video, you need to have a capable webcam.

If you need to host a live stream, showcase your products on live video or just chat with your family and friends, how do you do this?

Standard webcams are excellent, but sometimes, you need something more. Using your phone works just as well, but is often not ideal.

What do you do if you need to position your camera a bit further from your device? What if you need to stream for extended periods without interruptions? That’s where you get a wireless webcam.

Are there any wireless webcams?

Yes, there are. They’re still quite new in the market, pioneering a soon-to-be popular technology that could replace what’s currently available. In fact, in this article, we are going to discuss one of the best cameras in the market with this set of features.

Wireless Webcam You Can Buy

Wireless webcams are still quite novel in the market today, and you won’t find many brands that have ventured down this path. Because of the success of USB webcams, many companies haven’t tested out wireless versions yet.

Unlike other brands, Mevo dares to go down this path. Let’s look at how their webcams measure up.

Mevo Start is a wireless webcam that’s designed for a seamless live streaming experience. Besides that, it can also record video in high resolution, up to 1080p HD quality.

Your Mevo Start webcam is also compatible with plenty of your favorite streaming platforms, including Facebook Live, Twitch, YouTube, and OBS.

Its unique, slim and lightweight build allow you to mount it anywhere, including your PC monitor, laptop, microphone stand or camera tripod.

You can use this webcam with video conferencing software like Zoom meetings, and on Google Hangouts, Skype, and Microsoft Teams.

Also, you can simultaneously record your videos and calls on an SD card inserted into the camera.

That’s not all. You can remote-control the Mevo Start Webcam with your smartphone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi from over 100 feet! Also, Mevo has dedicated Android and iOS apps that give you full control of the webcam, including access to their live editing feature.

With it, you can pinch in and out to zoom, pan your view or tap to cut or open your video feed.

This webcam comes with an in-built battery that can last up to six hours, making it an ideal selection for extended live streaming.

3 in-built MEMS microphones offer excellent voice capture for up to 10 feet, especially during interactive video calls.

You can also extend the capabilities of this wireless webcam, by either connecting an external microphone via a 3.5 mm jack or using the USB-C input.

In case your device does not support Mevo’s webcam app, you can connect it directly to your device with a USB cable and use their mobile app to enable it.

How do Wireless Webcams Work?

A wireless webcam isn’t that different from your standard USB webcam. Therefore, it will work pretty much the same way. While there are a few slight differences, they’re similar in design and functionality.

Your webcam works by capturing moving images and converting them into binary digits that can be transmitted over the internet.

To do this, your webcam uses a sensor. This square-shaped sensor chip is below the small plastic lens.

It then converts the images into a digital signal you can transmit over the internet during a conference call or a virtual meeting.

Instead of using a USB cable to transfer digital data from your webcam to your computer, a wireless webcam uses your Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection.

This means that you can position your wireless webcam anywhere you want, provided it’s within range of your Wi-Fi or Bluetooth networks.

How to Connect a Wireless Webcam to Your Computer?

Depending on the manufacturer, webcams set-up instructions will vary. Here, I will highlight the basic steps you need to follow to connect any standard wireless webcam to your computer.

First, position the webcam in a suitable location. It could be on top of your monitor or laptop screen, or you can place it on a stand on your desk or table.

Ensure that it is close to at least one power outlet, in case you need to charge it. Also, make sure that it is within the range of your network.

Second, download and set up the software that comes with the webcam. Most webcam software comes with easy-to-setup wizards that will walk you through the installation process.

You can also check out the webcam manual for further manufacturer instructions.

Finally, Scan the network with the webcam software and select your wireless webcam to begin the automatic configuration process.

With Mevo, all you have to do is download and install the webcam app. Once you connect both your Mac and your Mevo camera to the same network, you can select it from the Webcam App Tray.

At the time of this writing, Mevo only supports mac but should soon add an app compatible with Windows.

While we wait for the Windows app together, you can plug your Mevo webcam directly onto your Windows PC using a USB cable and use it without an app.

Does Logitech make a wireless webcam?

After looking through their entire catalog, we could not find a single wireless webcam. At this moment, Logitech does not manufacture wireless webcams.

They may do this in the future though, so stay tuned. We’ll update you as soon as that happens. You can, however, get some of the best USB webcams in the market at Logitech.

Can you use a wireless security camera as a webcam?

Yes, you can. The quality of your experience, or at least the compatibility of your device, depends on the camera itself.

Because most video surveillance and web cameras have certain similar components, it is quite easy to repurpose one into a webcam.

So, how does this happen?

There are several ways in which you can convert your wireless security camera into a webcam.

1) Free Software

There are free programs that you can download and use right now to convert your wireless security camera into a webcam. A good example is the ManyCam software.

ManyCam creates a virtual webcam on your computer, and this allows you to stream live or previously recorded videos into other webcam programs.

To set up ManyCam on your computer:

  • Open the ManyCam website on your browser and download the software setup. It’s quite small and safe to use. Install the program on your computer.
  • Launch ManyCam, Double-click the ManyCam icon and open the ‘Options’ window. Under the ‘Video Source’ option, search and select your wireless security camera device. Once the ManyCam app has detected your webcam, you may select it from the drop-down menu. Here, you can configure the app to either play back pre-recorded video from the camera or stream video through the camera itself.
  • You can now launch your favorite platform, select ‘ManyCam Virtual Webcam’ as your video source, and attend virtual hangouts and conference calls.

2) Firmware updates

Some wireless security cameras just need a firmware update to turn into fully functional webcams.

The Wyze Security Cam v2, for example, can easily take firmware updates with an SD card.

Once updated, these security cams support Zoom meetings, Google Meet, GoToMeeting, BlueJeans, Skype, and Cisco.

To achieve this result, first drop the firmware update onto the root memory of the SD card.

Thereafter, plug it into a Wyze Cam v2 and hold down the setup button as you restart the camera to flash the firmware into the security camera.

When it reboots, it will work as a webcam.

The impressive thing about this camera and firmware update is that you can reverse the process and restore it back to its original functionality.

Final Thoughts

Get yourself a wireless webcam and enjoy live streaming and video conferencing in high-quality resolution.

In case you can’t get yourself a high-end option like Mevo, try to convert your existing IP or wireless security camera into a webcam. Don’t worry. It’s simpler than it looks.

You’d be surprised at how well your wireless security camera performs as a webcam.

However, I advise you to get a dedicated webcam for virtual meetings. While using your IP camera or wireless security camera may come as a short-term solution, you may sacrifice video and audio quality.

Keep the tinkering to when you’re trying out new things or you’re completely out of options.
