Because most video surveillance and web cameras have certain similar components, it is quite easy to repurpose one into a webcam.

So, how does this happen?

There are several ways in which you can convert your wireless security camera into a webcam.

1) Free Software

There are free programs that you can download and use right now to convert your wireless security camera into a webcam. A good example is the ManyCam software.

ManyCam creates a virtual webcam on your computer, and this allows you to stream live or previously recorded videos into other webcam programs.

To set up ManyCam on your computer:

• Open the ManyCam website on your browser and download the software setup. It’s quite small and safe to use. Install the program on your computer.
• Launch ManyCam, Double-click the ManyCam icon and open the ‘Options’ window. Under the ‘Video Source’ option, search and select your wireless security camera device. Once the ManyCam app has detected your webcam, you may select it from the drop-down menu. Here, you can configure the app to either play back pre-recorded video from the camera or stream video through the camera itself.
• You can now launch your favorite platform, select ‘ManyCam Virtual Webcam’ as your video source, and attend virtual hangouts and conference calls.

2) Firmware updates

Some wireless security cameras just need a firmware update to turn into fully functional webcams.

The Wyze Security Cam v2, for example, can easily take firmware updates with an SD card.

Once updated, these security cams support Zoom meetings, Google Meet, GoToMeeting, BlueJeans, Skype, and Cisco.

To achieve this result, first drop the firmware update onto the root memory of the SD card.

Thereafter, plug it into a Wyze Cam v2 and hold down the setup button as you restart the camera to flash the firmware into the security camera.

When it reboots, it will work as a webcam.

The impressive thing about this camera and firmware update is that you can reverse the process and restore it back to its original functionality.

In case you can’t get yourself a high-end option like Mevo, try to convert your existing IP or wireless security camera into a webcam. Don’t worry. It’s simpler than it looks.

However, I advise you to get a dedicated webcam for virtual meetings. While using your IP camera or wireless security camera may come as a short-term solution, you may sacrifice video and audio quality.
