Fiverr vs Taskrabbit (Full Review & Guide)

Freelancing has become a big thing in the last decade. It is great for some people because it allows them to have flexible schedules and work only when they feel like it.

While it surely has its downsides for some professionals when they aren’t lucky enough to get reliable clients, many fields of work are already crowded with freelancers.

Artists of all types, as well as writers for blogs and sites, have become freelancers so that they can pick only the jobs they think worthy of their abilities and time.

The industry has moved towards that business model, and many sites already help these professionals with finding work. Two of them are Fiverr and Taskrabbit.

In this article, we are going to check what each of these platforms offers both for people who want to work and people who need professionals to do certain jobs.

What’s Fiverr All About?

Fiverr is an online platform based in Israel that connects clients to freelancers. It works for digital freelancers of all types. It allows workers to sell gigs and clients to find freelancers and hire them for a specific gig or to work on longer projects.

What’s Taskrabbit All About?

Taskrabbit is an online platform based in the USA which connects freelance laborers to local demand. So, unlike Fiverr, this site isn’t made for writers, artists, coders, etc. It is a site for men and women who do manual labor such as electrical repairs and anything of the sort.

Which One Is Better?

It is impossible to give a verdict just yet because the two platforms, simply on what each one offers, appeal to very different publics.

Of course, sometimes one person might be an artist and also be a very skilled electrician. That way, it is possible for someone to use both platforms. Still, such a thing is highly improbable.

In the next sections, we will evaluate each of the services a bit better.

How To Use Fiverr?

First, you need to create your account. Doing that is very easy, as you can register with your Facebook, Google account, or even Apple account. Once you give all the needed details, you will receive a confirmation email and all will be set up.

Your profile is a crucial part of Fiverr. Without a good one, it is hard to get a job. So, this is the opportunity you’ve been seeking to show what you’ve got.

Here each freelancer can tell what skills they have, which experience they have, etc. As you can already picture, you need to sell yourself through your profile. After all, buyers/bosses will check your profile when deciding who to hire.

After your profile is fully set up, you can start to create gigs and send offers to buyers. These are different approaches, and you can do both at the same time.

We will cover this on the topic “How to make money on Fiverr”.

How To Use Taskrabbit?

To use Taskrabbit, you first have to check if you are in a city where the service is available. As of now, Taskrabbit is available only in a few cities in selected countries. Here are the list for the USA, UK, and Canada.

If you live in any other country, you can change the “.com” or “.ca” to that of your country. For France it would be “.fr”, Germany “.de”, and so on.

It isn’t guaranteed that Taskrabbit will be available in your country, much less your city if you live in a small city. If you live in Europe, though, you can try and check if it is available for you as Ikea has bought Taskrabbit a few years ago.

If the service is available where you live, then you need to sign up and build your profile by choosing which tasks you can offer. After that, Taskrabbit asks you to verify your identity and submit business verifications.

Here comes something that might sound unpleasant for many: to complete your registration and start offering services, you need to pay a fee of $25.

Only after paying the fee, you can set your schedule and the area of work you can cover so that potential clients will know when you are available to do tasks for them.

Verdict

Putting aside the difference that Fiverr is for digital jobs and Taskrabbit for manual ones, the other difference that stands out is accessibility. Since Taskrabbit is available only in a few cities, Fiverr definitely wins this round.

How To Make Money On Fiverr

Many starting freelancers get confused when they see Fiverr for the first time. After all, the site is crowded with long-time professionals selling their jobs for prices no newbie could even think to charge. But everyone’s got to start somewhere.

On Fiverr, one of the most common ways to get a job is through the creation/offering of what is known as a “gig”.

A gig is what freelance professionals offer, which can be found by anyone that searches through the site. Here is an example of a gig:

This is a designer offering to make 3 modern minimalist logo designs. They are specifying the starting price, meaning that it can go up depending on the client’s demands.

There is room for many other types of professionals, of course. At the top of the site you can see the following categories:

  • Graphics & Design
  • Digital Marketing
  • Writing & Translation
  • Video & Animation
  • Music & Audio
  • Programming & Tech
  • Data
  • Business
  • Lifestyle

These are just the main categories though. Each one is a huge area covering a variety of sub-categories that help both professionals offer their services and clients find what they are looking for.

Also, instead of sitting back and waiting for a client to find your gig and hit you up, you can find clients and hit them up.

Clients also post what they need to be done, and you can find these job offerings and send a proposal. Different workers can send proposals to the same job offering, meaning that it isn’t guaranteed that you will get the job.

As you might expect, Fiverr isn’t free. Even though you don’t need to pay any fee to start offering jobs, Fiverr will take a part of the payment once a gig is finished.

When a client pays, Fiverr charges $2 for gigs under $40, and 5% of the total value for gigs over $40.

Freelancers are the ones to lose more money, though. They only receive 80% of the total value they charged. This is the way Fiverr keeps up and running.

How To Make Money On Taskrabbit?

Before you start working on tasks that show up on Taskrabbit, you have to pay a $25 fee and attend an orientation. This is the reason why Taskrabbit is available in so few cities.

On the orientation, you should receive instructions and get a quick training about dos and don’ts with clients.

After that, you are ready to start picking jobs on the service. So, now you must be thinking that all jobs involve manual labor such as repairs and construction.

The odd thing, however, is that there are many other types of jobs for you to pick up on the app.

Some people online claim to make a living wage off of Taskrabbit because they pick odd job offerings such as go shopping for the client, help moving from one house to another, fold someone’s t-shirts, drop packages at post offices, etc.

As some might be already wondering, some of the tasks look somewhat like a game. It is like you are performing tasks for an NPC on an RPG. However, you are working for real people who pay you real money.

So, in the end, while having wide manual skills like making electric repairs, being able to build wooden furniture, etc. really pays off, sometimes you might not need any of those skills.

Each different task will pay you a different amount, of course. You are free to charge how much you think the job is worth.

Still, Taskrabbit gives you some orientations on how much you should start charging so that clients truly pick your services and no that of someone else.

Taskrabbit Vs. Fiverr: Final Verdict

Both platforms seem great to make money. However, Fiverr seems much more versatile and accessible for people that work with different niches.

Even though you can find odd, funny jobs that pay well on Taskrabbit, nothing of that is guaranteed, and the payment might not be as skyrocketing as one might wish.

The great thing about Taskrabbit is that you pay $25 once and then the money you make after that is all yours. Fiverr, on the other hand, will keep charging you 20% of your income every time. That seems to suck your money when you are just starting.

However, in a digital era when tons of clients need the types of jobs offered on Fiverr, this platform seems to be better. Even more because of accessibility.

You can work in any type of weather without leaving home. If you depend on Taskrabbit, though, you probably won’t work much on a rainy week.
