Is Telegram Used For Interviews (What You Should Know)

Ever since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, companies have used many apps to interview for their job openings.

While many people already know and use Telegram, it isn’t popular as an app for interviews. Are companies using Telegram to hire new workers?

In this article, we look at whether Telegram supports job interviews and if Telegram interviews are genuine.

Is Telegram Used For Interviews

Although Telegram has all the tools and features needed, most companies won’t use it to interview. Why? First, Telegram is an informal social messaging app. While it’s an excellent place for you and your friends to chat and hang out, it’s a terrible place for formal job interviews.

Second, managing multiple applicants at once can be a nightmare. If your application received hundreds of responses, sorting out qualified candidates from unqualified ones will be messy.

Keeping track of the progress of each applicant may cost you more than what you’d save by conducting Telegram interviews.

Verifying the authenticity and qualifications of each applicant will also be a nightmare. Since Telegram can offer both security and anonymity, it can open a door for massive fraud and a possibility of scams.

Scams go both ways. Fake recruiters can impersonate company HR departments and officers to defraud unsuspecting applicants.

Applicants can also exploit this loophole using fake application documents and profiles to make money, denying qualified candidates a fair chance at a job.

But, we’re looking at a future where recruiters could use Telegram to source for talent. More companies and brands are now opening Telegram channels and groups.

As they connect with audiences across this platform, they open the door for future hires from their own communities.

Also, as a user, you can now add your current job posting and skill set to your Telegram bio. Potential recruiters could find you and send direct messages to your Telegram inbox on opportunities for work or collaborations.

How Do You Know If An Interview On Telegram is Legit?

In most instances, an offer for a Telegram interview is a red flag and a scam. In the rare occasion the invitation is legitimate and a recruiter contacts you via Telegram, how do you know if it’s legit? Here are some things to look out for:

  • If it’s company policy to interview via Telegram, they’ll communicate it on all their official channels. Not only will such a condition be on their website, it will also be on their verified social media pages, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.
  • In other cases, their Telegram profile will also be verified. Their Telegram handle will have a verification check mark next to it.
  • Telegram may be their primary interview method, but it won’t be the only way. They’ll offer you other viable alternatives, like a Skype call or Zoom.
  • Your interviewers will not ask for anything sensitive. They’ll not ask for a fee, pictures of your ID, passport or official government documents, or for your SSN.
  • They will insist on a video call. They’ll reserve casual text chats to facilitate the interview process rather than as the primary interview method.
  • Other former and current candidates online agree that the interview is legit, it probably is.

Are Telegram Interviews Real?

In most cases, they aren’t.

Scammers will try to use Telegram to steal money or the identities of unsuspecting individuals. Since Telegram provides them with complete anonymity, most scammers can get away with massive fraud and identity theft.

Are Chat Interviews Real?

No, they’re not.

Most chat interviews are scams. Genuine recruiters prefer to use video calls to interview new candidates. Chat interviews can’t paint an honest picture of your knowledge, skills and attitudes. Instead, a recruiter will set up a video call to ask you essential questions.

Why Do Companies Use Telegram?

Companies use Telegram for many reasons. Here are some of them:

Telegram is an excellent venue for marketing. With over 500 million monthly active users, Telegram gives companies the opportunity to reach a massive audience across the world.

Companies can also organize promotional campaigns and target users and make exponential sales.

Besides that, the Telegram messenger app is available on all main platforms. You can download it to your Windows and Linux PC or Mac. It’s also available on iOS, iPadOS and Android for all your portable devices.

Telegram enables users to give instant feedback on products and services via message. Companies can also conduct surveys and collect valuable information from their users.

Does Telegram Have a Business Account?

Technically, Telegram has no designated business app or account. But, you can still create a branded business account with a Telegram bot.

To add an extra layer of security and authenticity, you can get a verified badge for your account. This way, users and customers can tell you’re the real deal.

Using Telegram’s Business and Bot APIs is free, and you can also connect them to Customer Relationship Management software or other messaging platforms.

Final Thoughts

Telegram is not a platform commonly used to carry out interviews. Regardless of its security features, scammers can still use it to extort other users. Often, that’s been the case. However, because of its informal nature, Telegram isn’t an ideal platform for job seekers or recruiters.
